I’ve never heard of a class that puts both cycling and circuit training into one AWESOME hour. But, why not get all the grueling stuff over with?! Armone’s Core Connection in La Jolla is a great place that does exactly that.
First of all, the moment I stepped in the studio I got a perma-grin because of all the positive energy. Everyone says hi and introduces themselves to you by name. I mean, EVERYONE. The studio has a full gym with sections for boxing, weight training, cycling, pilates and barre so I never expected such a close-knit feel. But you’re sure get that cozy vibe as soon as the owner, Armone Sullivan gives you her big smile.
We started on the spin bikes and before the class began all the ladies were catching up with each other on life, their dogs, their hair, and their vacations. You could tell they are used to seeing the same familiar faces every morning. It’s always a good sign that people aren’t shying away from the class, they actually show up regularly!
Armone was our instructor and she meant business. She had us do 3-4 minutes of intense bike rounds including a tough climb, a race, and sprints. I hadn’t gone to a spin class in a long time so I was sweating almost instantly. The warm-up was enough for me! But Armone kept encouraging us during those moments of near-exhaustion. It was fun! I always love a challenge and hate feeling like I’m wasting my time. I knew this class was already pushing me past my comfort zone and I would be leaving at the end shaky, sweaty, and feeling fab!
After 30 minutes of a tough spin class, it was circuit time. She had enough dumbbells for all of us, so we could use whatever was appropriate for our level. This circuit was INSANE! I’m used to lifting weights and getting kinda nuts in a gym. But when we started Armone’s reps, I couldn’t believe she wanted us to go all the way up to 10! She had us do 1 push up, 1 burpee, 1 deadlift, 1 lunge each leg, 1 sumo squat, 1 bicep curl. Sounds easy enough, right? Now do that all the way up to 10! 2 push ups, 2 burpees, 2 deadlifts, 2 lunges each leg, 2 sumo squats, 2 bicep curls. 3 push ups, 3 burpees… ok, I’m sure you get what I mean now. I nearly got sick halfway through, I told you Armone may look all sweet and innocent but this woman can WORK IT and she knows how to push you to your fullest potential! I LOVE THAT!
There was still more after circuit training. ABS TIME. We did lower ab leg lifts and we were forced to keep our ab muscles engaged for what felt like an hour! After about 10 minutes of that, my core felt on FIRE. They don’t mess around with easy ab moves, that must be why “core” is in their name.
From my head to my toes, I felt like I really did accomplish a lot in that hour. I couldn’t believe the intensity level we reached over and over again. They’re website nailed it. They say “At Armone’s Core Connection, our mission is to inspire people to be their best through a fitness forward lifestyle.” MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, Armone!
They also offer boxing, pilates and barre classes which I totally want to try now too. Hope you can check out this cool spot, tucked away at 7438 Girard Ave. in La Jolla and let me know how it goes. Pannikin Coffee is nearby so you can always treat yourself to a coffee afterwards.
