If Only Mats Could Talk…

I never thought I would even consider straying away from Lululemon’s The Mat. When I first got it (about 3 years ago) I realized I have found a safe haven to do tricks, twists, downward dog without slips, and lots of shavasana (nap time.) I love the texture and the way it allows me to grip with my hands and feet. I also love the padding and its thickness. I can even hang out on my head without feeling like something’s jabbing my brain. The cushioning sold me. It made me feel safe and secure which then opened me up to trying new moves and sinking into poses.

So when I attended a yoga event for Prana at the beach, I brought my Lululemon mat. But they had already laid out Prana mats for all of us. So without even thinking about it I put my Lululemon mat ON TOP Of the Prana mat. As we went through a great yoga session, I felt a little “off.” Perhaps because I had so much padding under me that I didn’t feel the full effects of doing yoga on the beach. So I chucked my lulu mat to the side and completed yoga on the Prana mat and I felt a lot closer to the earth, simply because I was.

The kind people at PrAna sent me a Belize Printed Xtra Light Mat that I was thrilled and so grateful to experience. It took a bit of getting used to during yoga sessions inside a studio, only because I’ve been so used to having a thicker cushion underneath me. But I really like the texture and how light it is to carry around. I also like feeling the ground under my feet. And, I gotta say if you’re doing yoga outside this is hands down the way to go. You can feel the crunch of the gravel and the grooves of the rocks. It certainly helps to really get into the spirit of being in nature when there is just a thin layer between you and it.

As seen on Prana’s website, they explain that this stylish mat was printed on non-Amazon harvested, natural tree rubber. So, your conscious practice starts before your yoga starts.

And who doesn’t love a good shavasana on the sand (but this way, you don’t get much sand in your hair.)

Your mat can often feel like “home” so I think there’s no right or wrong choice here. Choosing the right mat all depends on your mood, what you’re drawn to, and what you feel like rolling around on!

I’m all for having great-quality options!
